The Rider-Waite Tarot Deck: History & Symbolism
The most influential tarot deck in the English-speaking world — and the basis of most modern decks.
History
The deck was published in 1909 by the Rider company, designed by occultist Arthur Edward Waite and illustrated by artist Pamela Colman Smith. Waite's 1910 book, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot, explained the cards and popularized the Celtic Cross spread. Many now call it the Rider-Waite-Smith deck to credit Smith's art.
Why It Became the Standard
Smith illustrated every Minor Arcana card with a scene, making the deck far more intuitive than older pip decks. Most modern decks follow its structure and symbolism.
Key Symbols
- Pillars — duality (The High Priestess)
- The infinity sign — limitless potential (The Magician)
- Water — emotions (Cups)
- Mountains — challenges and achievement
