Reversed Tarot Cards: What They Mean & How to Read Them
A card that appears upside down is reversed. Here's how readers interpret reversals — and whether you should use them.
Five Ways to Read a Reversal
- Blocked energy — the upright theme is present but stuck.
- Internal — the theme is happening inside you rather than outside.
- Delayed — it's coming, but not yet.
- Excess or lack — too much or too little of the upright quality.
- Opposite — the reverse of the upright meaning (used sparingly).
Should You Use Reversals?
It's a personal choice. Beginners often read all cards upright and add reversals later. Our free tarot reading includes them so you can practise.
Examples
| Card | Upright | Reversed |
|---|---|---|
| The Tower | Sudden upheaval | Avoided or internal change |
| The Star | Hope, healing | Discouragement |
| Ace of Cups | New love | Blocked emotions |
| Ten of Swords | Painful ending | Recovery begins |
