The Four Elements in Tarot: Fire, Water, Air & Earth
Each suit belongs to an element. Understanding the elements unlocks the Minor Arcana — and how cards affect each other.
Suits and Elements
| Element | Suit | Themes |
|---|---|---|
| Fire | Wands | Passion, energy, creativity, ambition |
| Water | Cups | Emotions, love, intuition |
| Air | Swords | Thoughts, communication, conflict, truth |
| Earth | Pentacles | Money, work, body, home |
Elemental Dignities
In the Golden Dawn system of elemental dignities, neighboring cards change each other's strength:
- Same element strengthens both cards (two Cups intensify emotion).
- Friendly elements — Fire with Air, Water with Earth — support each other.
- Opposing elements — Fire with Water, Air with Earth — weaken or challenge each other.
- Other pairings are neutral.
Elements in the Major Arcana and Court Cards
Major Arcana cards also carry elemental associations through astrology — for example The Emperor (Aries, Fire) or The Moon (Pisces, Water). Court cards blend two elements: the rank (Page = Earth, Knight = Fire, Queen = Water, King = Air in the Golden Dawn tradition) plus the suit.
Reading the Elemental Balance
Count the elements in a spread. Lots of Fire suggests action and energy; lots of Water, emotion; missing Earth may point to a practical side being ignored.
Example: Reading Dignities in Three Cards
Imagine the Ace of Wands (Fire) between the Six of Cups (Water) and the Three of Cups (Water). Fire is flanked by its opposite element, so the new spark is weakened — enthusiasm dampened by nostalgia or emotional comfort. Swap the Cups for Swords (Air), and the same Ace becomes strongly supported: ideas feed the fire.
When Elements Are Missing
- No Fire — low motivation or passion.
- No Water — feelings being ignored.
- No Air — lack of clarity or communication.
- No Earth — practical matters neglected.
Frequently Asked Questions
What element is the suit of Swords?
Air in most modern decks, including the Rider-Waite-Smith tradition.
Do I have to use elemental dignities?
No — it's an optional technique. Many readers use it only to add nuance to cards without positions.
