Clarifier Cards in Tarot: When and How to Pull One
A clarifier is an extra card drawn to shed light on a confusing card in a spread.
What Is a Clarifier Card?
When a card in your spread doesn't make sense, you can draw one more card from the deck and place it beside it. The clarifier adds detail — it doesn't replace the original card.
How to Read a Clarifier
- Keep the original card's meaning in mind.
- Read the clarifier as a modifier: how, why or in what area.
- Read both together — for example The Tower clarified by the Ace of Pentacles can suggest a disruptive change that brings a new financial opportunity.
When Not to Use Clarifiers
- Don't pull clarifier after clarifier until you get a card you like.
- Don't use them to avoid a difficult message.
- One clarifier per card is usually enough.
Clarifiers vs Pulling a New Spread
A clarifier refines one card; a new spread starts over. If the whole reading feels off, it's usually better to step away and return later than to keep adding cards.
Examples
| Original card | Clarifier | Combined reading |
|---|---|---|
| The Moon | Page of Swords | Confusion caused by missing information — ask questions |
| Five of Pentacles | Six of Pentacles | Hardship eased by help from others |
| The Lovers | Two of Swords | A love choice you're avoiding |
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I draw a clarifier from?
